Researchers and students at Akkeshi Marine Station are currently engaged in various marine ecology and biological oceanography studies. Their research focuses on population and community ecology of coastal ecosystems, such as seagrass beds, rocky intertidal shores, tidal flats, and kelp forests. They also investigate phytoplankton photophysiology. Additionally, they conduct broader-scale ecosystem studies, including terrestrial and marine interactions, employing diverse approaches like biogeochemical analyses, satellite remote sensing, and biologging/acoustic telemetry. The target marine organisms encompass a wide range, including marine mammals like harbor seals, birds like whooper swans, numerous species of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other invertebrate animals, seagrasses, seaweeds, diatoms, dinoflagellates, other phytoplankton functional groups, bacterial community, etc.
