Researchers and students in Akkeshi Marine Station have been currently studying marine ecology and biological oceanography of variety of subjects, including population and community ecology of coastal ecosystems such as seagrass beds, rocky intertidal shore, tidal flat and kelp forest, and phytoplankton photophysiology. In addition, broader-scale ecosystem studies such as terrestrial and marine interactions have been conducted with various approaches, including biogeochemical analyses, satellite remote sensing, and biologging/acoustic telemetry. Target marine organisms are also variable, ranging from marine mammals like harbor seal, birds like whooper swan and blue heron, many species of fish, crustaceans, molluscs and other invertebrate amimals, seagrasses, seaweeds and phytoplankton.
